Sounds
of the City
The Honolulu Jazz Quartet is living proof that jazz is
alive and well in the Islands. Original compositions include
"Ole Buddy," a tribute to bassist Buddy Banks,
and "Remembrance," a slow bossa nova originally
written with the jazz musicians of Hawai'i's past in mind,
such as the late jazz legend Trummy Young. |

Kuleana
Maunalua, one of Hawai'i's favorite Hawaiian trios, lays
the groundwork with "E Liliu E," a traditional
song with a slack key treatment, and "Sanoe,"
a lovely song written by Queen Lili'uokalani. Kuleana
is dedicated to ensuring that "this foundation of
Hawaiian music is preserved and perpetuated for future
generations." |

Mohala
Hou, Music of the Hawaiian Renaissance
Legendary Keola Beamer's latest album is dedicated to
"the special people who helped shape the local music
scene in the 1970s," according to the artist, whose
recording career began in 1972 with the solo album Hawaiian
Slack Key in the Real Old Style. It's a flashback to the
old Territorial Tavern. |

Nina
When Hawai'i's foremost soprano, Nina Keali'iwahamana,
originally teamed up with musical master Jack de Mello,
it was the beginning of a special magic that would weave
a spell on Island audiences for years. Originally released
in the 1970s, this is the first time these selections
have been digitally re-mastered in CD format. |
Hawaiian 105 KINE's "Aloha Morning Show" hosts Frank
B. Shaner and Brickwood Galuteria put their heads together
for this issue's list of recommended music from the Islands.
